i recon i would rather be in a heavy canvas tent in really bad wether, quieter ,warmer and theres no contest between wooden poles compared to bendy fiber poles or ally poles that end up bent like bannans in stong winds .and dont get me started on nylon guy lines slipping loose.haveing said all that ive got a huge vango tent thats modern nylon for when i take the family camping and the modern designs do allow more standing room and they can be put away 10 min's after it rains as it just shakes dry.

Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.

Mine is the Armytents 4 metre bell tent, and it is probably the best tent I have ever had ,in any weather. They ain't cheap ,£300- £350 ,but they have masses of room, quick and easy to put up (with practice) but they are bloody heavy and a pain to dry out if the get soaked. No crawling about trying to get dressed ,at "Horn" we had 3 chairs and a table ,double airbed and 2 dogbeds for the labs ,and you still had room to stand up and dress, and it really does help you get in character. But I had to sell my 750 suzuki to afford it.
Incidently one the same size as mine would have housed : One General or
3 Officers or
5 Warrant Officers or
7 Sergeants or
15 !! Other Ranks

I doubt I'll have it in time to Il Giogo but this is what I'm hoping to buy this year.

Well as much as I disagree with all of you - I have never been warmer, drier or more comfortable than in Canvas over nylon - you may do as you wish.

Ditto!

And when the South sea breeze is gusting through; thick warm canvas will be what I'm wanting....

Josh's idea of having all the period tentage together is a good one. Let's do that. :good:

If any of you Brits want to experience a night (or two) in a period '44 dated Brit 2-man pup-tent, I'll be bringing two along (one for me, one spare)!

Maybe we'll have to form a laager with the cars and camp behind that, or even better, dig them in! Not so good when it rains of course....

Cheers

They were a bit unlucky with the weather for their weekender ,southerly force 5-6 is quite unusual ,the prevailing wind here is usually westerly ,and even with an east wind the campsite is a bit exposed but the quarry runs north/south and is usually very sheltered to the point of being sweltering.

Local boat skipper and Portland resident speaketh. Don't let this put off single shot riflers or nylon campers! :D

Well you could camp down in the quarry but you will need to bring a masonry drill to put your tent pegs in with!

Where do we park up? In the camping field or in the quarry approach road?

Thanks
Martin

All parking will be in the camping field. both quarry's and the approach roads and the usual parking area will all be part of the game zone.

I'll be arriving on Friday. Are there any height restrictions on vehicles? (My 'Command Bus' is 2.25m tall)

No height restrictions at all Macscooge. The field entrance just has a regular 5 bar gate.

I'm planning on bringing my 160lb tent, (canvas 14ft X 14ft), which you can stand up in and have a decent sized camp bed in, I'm happy to share , (as long as you don't mind my snoring  ), with up to 3 people.

I've brought an old scout tent, it's not ww2 but its canvas and I'll get quite a bit of use out of it at other camping events I've got coming up this year so happy to go with it for now untill I can afford a bell tent. It's quite a pale green, does anyone know of a suitable paint to use on canvas to get it to a more olive drab colour? I am intending to give it a coat of Fabsil before the game but thought I'd ask about an appropriate paint first.

I'd go steady on the paint. Isn't canvas supposed to "breathe"?

Very much so and that's why I posted up the question. Any normal domestic product that I know of would crack or damage the canvas. I might be just better off getting a big bit of camo net, but thought I'd ask in case anyone knew of such a paint or dye.
